Confirmation
The conformation program at St. John is a 2-year program for students in the 7th and 8th grade; though older students, and adults are welcome to attend as well. Because the number of students is generally small, both classes meet together and alternative content is taught in alternating years so that both grades receive a complete set of instruction, though not necessarily in order.
Confirmation is understood to be a time of preparation and education prior to becoming a full, adult, voting member of the congregation. It is hoped that confirmation will mark the end of the period of what some might call a "Sunday School" faith and mark the beginning of a more mature, active, and richer adult faith. Because of this the program is intended to be rigorous both spiritually and academically. Students will be required to question assumptions, and ultimately form their own statement of faith before being confirmed.
On the other hand, confirmation is also understood in modern culture to be one of many rights of passage into adulthood. Accordingly the program also incorporates aspects that are intended to shape active, thinking, ethically minded adults.
The confirmation classes meet weekly for 2 semesters (fall and spring) each year, generally the semesters are 12 weeks in duration, though that depends on the resources in use during a given semester. During the summer months, and other times when classes are not in session students are kept busy with a mentoring program, community service, service in the ministry of the congregation, summer camp, and other various activities.
Topics covered during the academic portions of the confirmation program include The Scripture, and how to properly use and understand it; The Lutheran Confessions; Christian Ethics; and The Christian in Society. Additional topics depending on need and the interest of the students will also be covered.
While it may sound strenuous (and it is) students do enjoy their time in confirmation, even while doing battle with the dreaded "101 questions." Pastor Andersen is committed to making sure that the students do learn something along the way, even if it is purely by accident, or if he has to trick the into it.
